Differences between LED and Fluorescent Tubes.

Tony Black |

Which you think are brighter LED or Fluorescent tubes? LED lights are much brighter compared to fluorescent tube lights, LED are by far the better option. Another advantage that LED lights have versus fluorescent tubes is that when using LED, you do not get exposed to UV or IV rays, which are harmful for eyes and skin. LED lights are much more energy efficient than fluorescent tubes and much more durable. Fluorescent tubes have been used for many years, around one hundred years and this technology has been improved in many ways, but LEDs are still better in many ways.

Here we can mention some disadvantages of fluorescent lights compared to LED. Fluorescent lights contain harmful substances such as toxic mercury, phosphor and others, these substances are difficult to dispose and can be dangerous to humans and the environment. Fluorescent lights are not recommended to be used along with motion sensors because this type of setting reduces their lifespan (hours of operation). The constant on/off cycle affects them negatively reducing their expected approximate 10,000 hours of operation. Other feature that might not be convenient about fluorescent lights, for most applications, is that they are omnidirectional, that means they spread light in every direction, this can cause light wasted where you do not need it, or the light fixture needs to have more reflective parts to use the light spread in 360 degrees. Fluorescent lights can provide small amounts of UV radiation, this can be bad for some products specially with dyed surfaces or some paintings. Fluorescent lights require a ballast to stabilize it, if the ballast gets old or a bit damaged over time the light will produce noise (hum or buzz noise).

LED is the latest technology breakthrough they have a very long lifespan compared to traditional lighting, including fluorescent tubes, for example Hyperlite LED High Bay Lights (Hero Series, Radar Series, Saturn Series and Will Series) have a lifespan of over 50,000 hours of operation (and this is the reason why they can offer a 5-year warranty against quality related issues), four to five times the lifespan of fluorescent lights.

LED lights are much, much more energy efficient compared to traditional lighting, up to 130LM per Watt or even 140 LM per Watt, LED lights do not waste energy in several ways old traditional lighting do, LEDs do not generate as much heat as incandescent or fluorescent tubes, almost no heat, LED lights are a type of directional lighting so they do not waste light in every direction, as another example Hyperlite’s Radar Series provide a 120-degree beam angle. LED lights require much less maintenance than traditional lighting including fluorescent lights. Another great advantage of LED lighting is that they are more controllable, they can be well used with dimmers, motion sensors, etc.
