Office Lighting Causing Your Migraines? Discover the Connection!

If you’ve noticed more frequent headaches when working in an indoor environment like an office, lighting may be the culprit.

Those prone to migraines are extremely sensitive to light, including bright, flashing or flickering, high-wavelength light (red) and low-wavelength light (blue).

If you’re inside an office, staring into a screen and working under a glaring overhead, it can actually make you more vulnerable to migraines. Maybe it helps if you give yourself a break to escape this state briefly, turn off all the lights and leave the office, but you can't cut your workday in half every day when a migraine hits.

Reason and Solution

If you’re a frequent migraine sufferer, you likely already know that there’s no ture cure — and the best we’ve got is home remedies and medications to temporarily alleviate it. Another solution is to “avoid migraine triggers.

Computer Screens

Migraines are triggered by computer screens. Spending prolonged periods of time in front of a computer screen strongly correlate with those that have migraines and studies done by the NIH has proven that long-term exposure to blue light from screens leads to an increased number of chronic headaches and migraines. ​The light from a computer monitor is one of the triggers for migraine.

Fluorescent Lights

Overhead lighting in the workplace can cause problems affecting you as much as glare on your computer screen, whether you're working at a computer, walking around, talking on the phone or in a meeting.

Switching Led lights. This is very useful when you work in an office with a harsh fluorescent ceiling. Fluorescent lights flicker, and although the human eye can't normally perceive it, the flickering itself can trigger migraines. led them by more than one yard. led lights not only outlast fluorescents, they also are free of harmful ultraviolet rays and toxic fumes. Led lights also offer the ability to select a color temperature. Studies have shown that warmer color temperatures are gentler on the eyes and cause less fatigue. They range from 2700 to 4000 on the Kelvin scale and emit a relaxing white light.

Led panel lights offer selectable color options so you don't have to struggle with a fixed color. Most office buildings stick to 5000K to help improve concentration and keep people alert, but recently many office buildings have begun to lower their color temperature to 4000K as excessive eye strain becomes more and more of a problem in our society.

Lights Out on Your Headache 

Although headaches that are provoked at the office can stem from stress, sleep deprivation, the use of headphones, or excessive caffeine, lighting is frequently a source of work-related headaches.

Remember that there are many potential sources of headache as you work to make your immediate workspace as healthy as possible.
