Office Lighting Causing Your Migraines? Discover the Connection!

If you find that you have more frequent migraine attacks when working in an indoor environment such as an office, then lighting may be the culprit.

People who are prone to migraines tend to be highly sensitive to light, including bright, flickering, high-wavelength light (red) and low-wavelength light (blue).

When you're stuck in an office, staring at a screen and sitting under a bright ceiling, it can actually make you more susceptible to migraines. Maybe it helps if you give yourself a break to escape this state briefly, turn off all the lights and leave the office, but you can't cut your workday in half every day when a migraine hits.

Reason and Solution

If you suffer from frequent migraines, you probably already know that there is no real cure and the best we can come up with is home remedies and medications for temporary relief. Another solution is to “avoid migraine triggers.

Computer Screens

Computer screens can trigger migraines. Sitting in front of a computer screen for long periods of time is strongly associated with migraines, and NIH studies have shown that long-term exposure to blue light from screens leads to more cases of chronic headaches and migraines. The light from a computer screen is one of the triggers for migraines.

Fluorescent Lights

Overhead lighting in the workplace can cause problems affecting you as much as glare on your computer screen, whether you're working at a computer, walking around, talking on the phone or in a meeting.

Switching Led lights. This is very useful when you work in an office with a harsh fluorescent ceiling. Led lights also offer the ability to select a color temperature. Studies have shown that warmer color temperatures are gentler on the eyes and cause less fatigue. They range from 2700 to 4000 on the Kelvin scale and emit a relaxing white light.

Led panel lights offer selectable color options so you don't have to struggle with a fixed color. Most office buildings stick to 5000K to help improve concentration and keep people alert, but recently many office buildings have begun to lower their color temperature to 4000K as excessive eye strain becomes more and more of a problem in our society.

While headaches triggered at work can be the result of things like stress, sleep deprivation, using headphones, or high caffeine intake, lighting is often one of the causes of work-related headaches.

Keep in mind that multiple factors can contribute to your headaches as you try to make your workspace as healthy as possible.
