What is LED light?

LED lights are naturally occurring semiconductor devices that emit visible light when an electric current is passed through them.LED bulbs work much more efficiently than incandescent bulbs, with a relative efficiency of 90%.The brightness of LED lighting is measured in lumens. Therefore, the higher the output of LEDs, the more likely they are to heat up.

So does the LED lights get hot?

Not exactly. They actually get warm, not hot like other types of light bulb fixtures.

The main reason lights get hot is that some of the electrical energy is converted to heat as the light works.

A tungsten bulb with more than 100 watts of power will only produce 10 watts of light. The remaining 90 watts of heat will be wasted.

LEDs, on the other hand, are more efficient than tungsten bulbs. However, they also generate some heat.

For example, a 10-watt LED bulb emits light at 8 watts, while the remaining 2 watts generate heat.

  • The LED bulb produces 8 watts of output and 2 watts heat with 10 watts input. The LED bulb produces a maximum output of 12 watts at 15 watts, and can also generate 3 watts of heat.
  • The tungsten filament bulb produces only 10 watts of heat and can be used with 100 watts input.

As a result, LED bulbs produce less heat compared to tungsten or other types of bulbs.

In addition to this, Led bulbs are equipped with heat sinks in order to release the small amount of heat generated into the surroundings. However, this becomes difficult if the led light is placed in a closed appliance. Closed appliances do not provide proper ventilation to the extent that it is difficult to dissipate the heat well, greatly affecting the temperature of the led, which can lead to overheating of the bulb, thus shortening its life.

How hot do led bulbs actually get?

In our research, we have found that LED bulbs have heat sink temperatures between 60°C and 100°C when fully lit, depending on the model, airflow, room temperature and other factors. As you can see in the resulting thermal image of the LED bulb test, the higher the temperature, the yellower the color tone.

Do heat generating led bulbs last long?

Obviously, LED bulbs are very efficient. However, this fact can change due to heat. The heat generated by these bulbs can greatly affect their efficiency.

Temperature at the junction of an LED can be affected by the surrounding temperature and other parts of the bulb like the lens or driver. The LED lights have many parts that can change the voltage of the electricity coming from the outlet in your home to the lower voltage needed to run the LED chips. This makes LED bulbs more sensitive to heat than incandescent bulbs.
